Miss Koladicz

My name is Miss Koladicz and I am a graduate of Sacred Heart University. I received my bachelors of science in mathematics as well as my masters of arts in teaching with a concentration in technology. As a teacher at Berlin High, it is my goal to reach out to every student and help them accomplish their goals to the best of their ability. Each of them will be held accountable for their own work and be able to explain how they reached their answers. I am easily accessible before school, after school, and during y-period for students to come for extra help. I look forward to a successful year.

Geometry

Welcome to Geometry. This year the students will be studying of the basic geometry concepts from points, lines, and planes, to theorems and proofs. The students will be using a book titled Geometry tools for a changing world. Class requirements include a notebook/organizational system, a calculator (TI30 X is recommended but not required) and something to write with. Some of the major concepts being taught will be:

Ø Geometry vocabulary

Ø Triangles

Ø Quadrilaterals

Ø Surface Area and volume

Ø Similarity

Ø Parallel lines and related angles

Ø Circles

In this course, the concepts of Plane Geometry are developed through hands-on activities. Inductive and deductive reasoning are introduced early and applied throughout the year as students progress from informal arguments to a more formal presentation of proof. Algebra skills are reinforced through multiple tie-ins with geometric concepts.

Geometry*

Welcome to Geometry*.  This year the students will be studying from a book called Geometry.  The students will be building a solid background for reasoning through proofs and discussions.  The students will be studying theorems and applying them to discover other geometric concepts.  Course requirements include:  a calculator (TI30X is recommended but not required), a notebook and something to write with. Some of the topics that will be discussed include:

Ø      Geometry Vocabulary

Ø      Deductive Reasoning

Ø      Parallel lines and planes

Ø      Congruent Triangles

Ø      Quadrilaterals

Ø      Inequalities in Geometry

Ø      Similar Polygons

Ø      Right Triangles

Ø      Circles

Ø      Area of Plane Figures

Ø      Area and Volume of Solids

In this course, inductive and deductive reasoning are introduced early and applied throughout the year as students progress from informal arguments to a more formal presentation of proof.  A greater emphasis is given to logic and more rigorous treatment is given to deductive proof and critical thinking.

Mr. Thurston

Hello.  My name is Mr. Thurston.  I am  a math teacher at Berlin High School.  This year, I am teaching algebra I, geometry, and integrated math 4.  I studied mathematics at Rutgers, the state university of New Jersey as an undergraduate and secondary mathematics education there as a graduate student.  My goal as a teacher is to help students learn, apply, and value mathematics.  This means that I want my students to come out of my class able to understand, visualize, and explain new mathematical concepts.  I want them to be able to think critically to determine how to solve novel problems using these concepts.  Finally, I want them to see why this information is important and see where it fits into their own lives.  I proudly carry a love for mathematics and hope to share that with my students.

Mrs. Thurston

Hi I am Mrs. Thurston, I am a graduate of CCSU with a degree in Mathematics and Earth Science and a masters degree in Secondary Education. Along with teaching math at BHS I am the women's and men's swim coach and co-advisor of the class of 2010. Through raising my own five children I have learned the value of communicating with and educating today's youth. I strive to reach as many students as possible with a firm and structured classroom. I expect all students to maintain a well organized notebook and to demonstrate mastery of the concepts through work shown on homework as well as assessments. I encourage students to seek extra help during class, after school and before school. My goal here at Berlin high is to create and active learner and to build self confidence in the students both within the classroom walls and in the school community.

Ms. Romano

My name is Ms. Romano.  I have taught Mathematics at BHS since 2000.  This year I am teaching Algebra 1 Accelerated, Accelerated PreCalculus and Integrated Math 2.  In addition, I serve as Co-Advisor to the Class of 2010.

Algebra 1*

Course Description:

This course includes a study of the real number system, first degree equations and inequalities and an introduction to quadratic expressions and equations.  The course emphasizes problem solving, applications to real life situations and communication about algebra among students.  The curriculum utilizes real data and technology to help visualize the material.  A comprehensive CAPT preparation component in included.

Students are required to keep an organized three-ring binder for this course.  This notebook will be graded quarterly.  In addition, students are required to have a scientific calculator with them daily.  I recommend the TI-30 X-IIS or TI-30 X-IIB.
